History
The Phillips screwdriver was invented by Henry F. Phillips who hailed from Portland, OR. He invented the currently common and renowned socket head screw that is X-shaped that became a favorite with car makers who wanted a screw that gives more torque and firm hold than the traditional slotted screws.

Henry Phillips was aware of the weakness of ordinary slot screws with power screwdrivers; a lot of precious time was wasted on fitting the screwdriver into the required slot. Then, there was the functioning of the centrifugal force which tends to slide the screw off from the desired position. Sometimes, there is no control over the depth in which the ordinary screw can get to. One may get frustrated with the stalling, spinning or stripping of screws.

All these failings slowed down car production; hence, car makers used the Phillips screwdriver on X-shaped screws for a quick and easy screw up job. This would speed up the assembly line process with a greater efficiency.

Although the Phillips screwdriver invention was initially rejected, the American Screw Company eventually convinced General Motors in 1936 to utilize Phillips head screw in their Cadillac manufacturing. Henry Phillips lost his eponymous invention patent in 1949.
